Hi! I’m Miriam Balanescu, a culture writer and editor based between London and Cambridge, specialising in film and books criticism, as well as lifestyle writing.
I have written features, interviews and reviews for The Guardian, BBC Culture, The Economist, The Independent, i Newspaper, The New Statesman, and other publications. As a lifestyle journalist, I write regularly for the Financial Times and Time Out and have written for Conde Nast Traveller.
I have experience in news reporting and investigations, editing a local London newspaper and contributing to The Londoner. I am also an illustrator and photographer, taking photos for Time Out.
I have chaired panels and events and introduced screenings for the likes of the Romanian Cultural Institute (interviewing Nobel Prize nominee Mircea Cartarescu), Cambridge Film Festival, David’s Bookshop, Markfield Road Festival and Picturehouse cinemas. I’ve been invited to speak on The Economist’s ‘Intelligence’ podcast, Klassiki podcast and NPR radio.
I also write for Hammer Film and StudioCanal releases and contribute to Picturehouse Recommends magazine.
Finally, I also write fiction, and have had short stories published in magazines including streetcake, Stand and The Airgonaut. I was also longlisted for the Alpine Fellowship and was selected as one of the National Centre for Writing’s 2022-23 cohort on their flagship Escalator programme, mentored by Katri Scala. My unpublished creative long-fiction work was shortlisted in 2021’s TLC Pen Factor competition, shortlisted for the Jewish Book Week Emerging Writer Award and longlisted for the Moniack Mhor Emerging Writer Award. I am available as a ghost writer.
